Raw and Charming Fenix Food Factory
As raw as Berlin and as delicious as only Rotterdam can be! At the Fenix Food Factory you can shop your regional produced groceries and stay for a drink and delicious food. This very urban gem is a bit raw but absolutely full of charm.
The Food Factory is located at the outskirts of the city center on the Katendrecht peninsula. Years ago well known for its red light district but totally renovated from 2010 onward. The Fenix Food Factory gives the former dockside area a second life by turning the outdated warehouse into an unpolished version of a food court.
Specialty Shops At Fenix Food Factory
A group of seven entrepreneurs with a great love for crafted and fresh food turned their dream into reality and joined together to start the Fenix Food Factory in the former warehouse Fenix II. The entrepreneurs and their specialties are: home brewed beer from Kaapse Brouwers, roasted coffee of Stielman Koffiebranders, delicious homemade cheese of Booij Kaasmakers, very tasteful local meat of Firma Bijten, specialists in sourdough bread Jordy’s Bakery, the 1st Cider shop in The Netherlands CiderCider, regional vegetables of Rechtstreex and since last summer the bookstore Bosch & de Jong and fisherman Goede Vissers also joined.
Besides shopping good quality food to bring home I’d like to come here for three other purposes: brunch, lunch and after work drinks with friends.
Brunch at Fenix Food Factory
Every Sunday morning this is one of the best places to brunch in Rotterdam. You’ll buy a wooden plate and collect all breakfast ingredients from the shops yourself. In that way you will get a great idea of all the stuff that is sold and create a diverse brunch. Think of great coffee, fresh bread, fruit juice, eggs, fruit, milk and homemade cheese and meat. Really popular!
Lunch at Fenix Food Factory
Lunch at the Food Factory gives you plenty to choose from. Jordy’s bakery serves really really nice and affordable breads. And Firma Bijten and Booij Kaasmakers serve wooden plates with a slice of rustic bread and a range of cheeses (accompanied with mouthwatering chutneys), meat or a combination of both. I really love these plates, also great as a pre diner bite, as they give you the opportunity to taste different delicacies without having to choose.
After Work Drinks
The brewers of Kaapse Brouwers have a very cosy corner in the former warehouse with a fireplace to keep you warm during winter. They have lots of beers on tap and are very helpful in making sure you pick just the type of beer you like! Besides beer you’re also able to get non-alcoholic lemonades. What I love most is that you’re able to bring in some cheese, fries or pizza from the other vendors in the Fenix Food Factory to have a little bite with your friends accompanying the delicious beers. The Kaapse Brouwers also sell beer-kits that you can take home for yourself or give away as a present to a friend.
Inside the large warehouse is plenty of room for workshops, tastings and events. In the weekends there often is a market where local food is sold and besides the residents of the Fenix Food Factory also other entrepreneurs from Rotterdam sell their specialty foods. There’s room to sit inside on second hand couches and chairs. But it’s really the outside sunny terrace where you want to chill with the spectacular view over the river Meuse and city skyline. This is a concept every self respecting city should have!
