Meert’s Tearoom and Shops in Lille
In 1761 a sweets and chocolate shop, now called Meert, opened its doors in Lille at 27 Rue Esquermoise. The shop quickly gained a superb reputation, especially for its famous ice cream, which is still sold in front of the shop. Besides the shop Meert also has a tea room to enjoy the great tasting chocolates along with a nice cup of tea or coffee.
The tearoom has a classic style interior with wooden paneling on the walls, a large chandelier hanging from the ceiling and lots of detailed decoration throughout the entire building. The details even reach to your plate with the typical “M” on the plate and, in my case, chocolate cake! All in all the interior makes for a luxurious feel and a great place to have an easy start of a day exploring Lille with a nice cup of coffee.
Meert has two adjacent shops to the tearoom, one where all kinds of cakes and sweets are sold and another where you can buy different kinds of tea and chocolate. Once you’re inside and see all the people gazing through the shopping windows you realize that you were doing the same thing a moment ago. All the stuff looks that good!
The tea and chocolate in the other shop make for a great gift for someone at home or a culinary souvenir for yourself of course ;-). That is, if you’re able to choose from the great range of flavors on display!
I would say you should not miss this great place for a pitstop during your shopping in Lille! You can find more useful tips for your city trip to Lille in the complete City Guide.
