Zeevlam: Dining at the Fish Auction
Last weekend one of my favorite restaurants, Zeevlam in Scheveningen, opened its doors again for a brand new season. Located in the building of the Scheveningen fish auction you can enjoy an extraordinary good dinner in an extraordinary atmosphere.
It’s always a surprise who’ll be the chef of the evening (you can off course have a sneak peak online) and they’re offering a wide range of great names during the season. This month you can enjoy the specialties of Justin Brown. A British chef that’s named the Best Pub Chef of 2011 and worked together with no one less than Jamie Oliver at restaurant Montes Knightsbridge.
Zeevlam serves the ‘menu du marché’. A menu the chef creates based on the availability of seasonal ingredients. And the fish comes off course from the fleet that is part of your amazing view from the table. Our menu started with bread and butter, followed by a delicious fish soup. The stock was home made and I loved the pieces of fish in the soup. The third course was a bowl of Dutch mussels cooked in beer with herbs and onions. These mussels were amazingly soft and the beer gave a nice twist. The main dish was a steak-sized oven roasted kabeljauw with samphire, wild mushrooms and fennel. The kabeljauw was amazingly good, wow this chef can cook! And also the combination of veggies is surprisingly good. At this stage I thought there wasn’t any space left for a desert, until I saw what it was: honey glazed figs, vanilla ice-cream and white chocolate flakes!
What’s new at Zeevlam
In my previous blogpost about Zeevlam I already described the spectacular and extraordinary location of this restaurant. This time there where large white round balloons above the dining tables that seem to lower the ceiling. You’ll enjoy your diner at long table rows together with the other guests. Although the municipality has big plans with the area, Zeevlam tries to keep their restaurant and the spectacular building in place. Therefor they ask everyone to give a very small donation (let’s say €2, so nothing to complain about) or pay a full year membership for €5 and receive a bottle of wine and many thanks!
It’s great that Zeevlam is back for another season and it’s a not to miss spot for all you fish lovers out there! Friday and Saturday evenings start at about 19:00 hours.
